Landscape Quilting Sketch Tutorial

Does this look like a tree and some grass?

or is this better grass

Let's rough cut some land and call it sky, land and water!  To rough cut, be really choppy with your scissors.

Now rough cut a tree from the dark fabric

I choose a Superior Rainbow thread to stitch the grass in.  It's dead grass!

Stitching the grass is very random and rough.

The tree was stitched with a solid color Superior trilobal polyester

The smaller branches were first drawn in with a black Pigma Pen

The tree is stitched

Colored pencils add subtle variety to the water

Teal, purple and gray oil pastels were added in small amounts to the sky

Black brush marker and gray oil pastel shade the sunny and shadowed side of the tree while white oil pastel adds highlights to the water.

Blach and gray oil pastel mark the shoreline and shadow in the water.

Maybe some cattails will add interest to the water and soften the shoreline.

This little sketch is done for now.  This is not a completed art quilt.  It is a study to be used for trying out diffrerent techniques and materials.  Making numerous sketches that are simple in design can be used to develop skill and decide what techniques you like to use and when.

To celebrate the completion of the studio addition , we are having an open house Sunday afternoon, September 27 from 2-6PM. We’ll have refreshments and door prizes which will be gift certificates to be used for classes, supplies or finished items. Please come and help us celebrate. Bring your spouse and/or a friend. Enter through the side drive on Schooley Road just past our driveway. I am anxious to share and show off my new space.

I now have more thread than ever – Rainbow, King Tut, Bottom Line and even a light weight Mettler cotton that is the best for piecing.

Quilting Classes

Beginning Quilting – This fall the beginning class will be an old favorite pattern to learn some basic techniques. We will be making a table runner “Star for all Seasons”. The techniques of cutting with the rotary cutter, getting on straight of grain, sewing the scant 1/4 inch seam, half-square triangles, simple borders, basting the layers, quilting and binding. By doing a smaller project, we should be able to get through all of the steps in 4 class meetings. Class meets Wednesdays, Sept 30 & Oct 7, 14 and 28 from 6:00-8:30 PM. Cost of class $60 plus book $5.60. At the first class meeting we will be learning some basic techniques and talking about fabric selection. Fabric for your project will be needed at the second class meeting.

NEW – You’re the Designer – Really! – In this class you will create a simple motif to use as your block. We will start in black and white and then transpose to using color and a variation in scale. We will work primarily in solids. You may bring your own or choose from my stash of a gazillion colors. $4.50/yd for commercial fabrics and $10/yd for the fabrics I have hand dyed. Three whole days. Cost $90. Oct 7, 14, and 28. 9AM-3PM. For experienced quilters. Bring a lunch.

The quilt at the right is one that I did in black and white. Later I did it in varying shades and tones of primarily red and green.

NEW – Creating with a Strip Set - You will create a strip set with 4-6 coordinating fabrics the full width of the fabric. We will then slice this up with curves, splay out the pieces and insert a contrasting fabric to fill the spaces. Sewing tight curves will be covered. Class meets 2 whole days, Wed, Nov 11 and 18 from 9AM – 3PM. Cost of class $60. For experienced quilters. Bring a lunch.

NEW – Creating a Quilt with One Gradated Fabric - I have bolts of several different Benartex fabrics that gradate through different colors and values in the one piece of fabric. In this class we will cut up the fabric into large and small pieces to create a beautifully color blended piece. You get a complex quilt with only one piece of fabric. Class meets 2 whole days from 9AM – 3PM and costs $60. Fridays, Oct 30 and Nov 6. These two quilts were made from the same bolt of fabric. Your quilt will be different from both of them.

Let’s Face It – Does your quilt really need a binding to complete the design. If not, face it. You will learn how to apply a facing using techniques from dress making so that your quilts will have a crisp edge and no bulk in the corners. We will do one sample with square corners and one with irregular edges. Thursday afternoon October 15 from 1PM – 3:30PM. $20. Bring two quilt sandwiches 18” on a side.

Free Motion Classes

Free Motion Feathers – Feathers are both beautiful and a good filler of space in your quilting. In this class you will learn to do both marked and unmarked feathers. After reviewing the basics of free motion we will work on ways to relax and play with a variety of styles and uses of feathers. Bring 6 - 12” quilt sandwiches, thread of your choice, and be sure to have your free motion (darning) foot along. Cost of class is $20 and meets once on Tuesday,Oct 13 from 6:00-8:30 PM

Thread Painting – As you may know free motion stitching is one of my favorite things to do. In this class we won’t be using it for quilting, but for creating small thread pieces which can be applied to your quilts or clothing. We will be using water soluble stabilizer and an embroidery hoop on the machine to create free standing appliqués as well as thread painted fabric pieces. You will need to have a free motion(darning) foot. Bring some of your favorite thread. Thursday, Oct 29 from 1:00-4:00 PM. Cost $20

Free Motion Workshop – If you have tried free motion, but never really got it going like you wanted, perhaps this workshop would help. We will review the basics and work with a variety of designs and threads. Bring 6 - 12” quilt sandwiches and be sure to have a free motion (darning) foot for your machine. Class meets Friday, Oct 9, 9:00-3:00. Bring a lunch. Cost of class $30.

SPECIAL TOPICS CLASSES

New Ideas inFlower Pounding – We will review the basics of the flower pounding process and also investigate doing lettering, animal forms and modifying the technique to use different types of paper. The class will cover treating the fabric, transferring the plant image, inking the image to enhance the shapes, masking images creating shapes and choosing a border and quilting design. You will need to bring plant material, masking tape (1/2” to 2” wide) and a hammer. I will give you a half yard piece of treated fabric and a piece of watercolor paper to start with and will have more fabric and paper available. Cost $30. Class meets once on Friday, Oct 2 from 9:00-3:00. Bring a lunch.

Making your Flower Pounding Permanent – This class expands on the enhancing flower pounding class offered in the past using Tsukeniko inks to include applications with colored pencil, pastels, acrylics and more. You will start with a piece you have previously pounded and selectively enhance some flowers or leaves using a variety of techniques. Your fabric won’t look painted, but the colors will be more permanent than pounded plants alone. You will use my materials during class. This technique can also be used on any quilt. Class fee $20. Class meets once on Thursday, Oct 8 from l:00-3:30 PM.

How to Print on Fabric – Bring your photos and we will go through the procedure to edit the photos and print them onto fabric. I will go through the process of treating your own fabric which saves a lot of $. Cost of class $10 plus book Photo Fun $14.40 plus supplies. (8 x 11 treated fabric for $1.25 + $1.00 for color printing) Class meets Tues, Oct 27 from 1:00-3:00PM
